Expanding your knowledge of health issues
From promoting public transportation to educating about HIV/AIDS, public health campaigns, initiatives and policies begin with research about the disease and the target population. As a public health practitioner, you must understand not only how to collect the data but how to interpret and apply the information to create effective initiatives.
The public health program at Missouri State provides opportunities for faculty supervised research about different aspects of the public health field. Possible areas of research include:
- Anti-smoking campaigns
- Chronic disease prevention
- Emergency preparedness
- Environmental health
- Homeland security
- Mental health issues
- Minority health
- Rural health issues
- Substance abuse and prevention
- Women’s health
Research institute
One of our faculty members, Dr. Dalen Duitsman, is also the director of the Ozarks Public Health Institute (OPHI). Oftentimes, our students work with OPHI to conduct research, interpret data and execute public health campaigns.
Research presentations
The Missouri Public Health Association invites students to submit an abstract of their current research for display during the Annual Conference in September. This event allows you to network with professionals in the field, learn about current issues and trends, and receive feedback on the research you are conducting in the program.
Conveyed through a poster format, past projects have included research on HIV/AIDS, the methamphetamine epidemic in southwest Missouri, bioterrorism and West Nile Virus.
